[30 Days of Fic - Day 23] "Flash"

Author's Notes: Trying something completely different here, sort of using the prompt as a free-writing exercise and seeing where the stream of consciousness goes. Hope I'm not wasting everyone's time, and if I did, hey, at least it's short. ;D

Flash.

I'm falling. I'm falling and I can't stop it. My balance is skewed and the ground is gone, but rushing at me at the same time.

Flash.

My mother always told me that if I fall in a dream, I'll wake up before I hit the bottom.

Flash.

"If you hit the bottom, that's when you die." She would joke, and laugh like some sort of demonic witch.

Flash.

It was the scariest thing of my childhood; not actual events, not losing people or fights or insignificant (in the larger scheme of things) failures.

Flash.

It was that fear that I would go to sleep, that I would fall and that I wouldn't wake up again.

BANG.

It hurts mommy. I don't want to fall. I don't want to not wake up.

Flash.

I see my reflection in a puddle; I've gone sideways.

Flash.

I look terrified.

Flash.

Please mommy, don't let me hit the ground.

BANG.

I don't fear the fall any more. The world is pain, enveloping me...

Flash.

...destroying me, ripping me apart from the inside out.

Flash.

I want to hit the ground now. On the ground there is no pain. On the ground there is heaven's reward.

Flash.

Or Hell's Eternal Pain. I can't decide.

Thump.

The ground meets my body and the ache and the agony become one.

Flash.

My head hits and I don't know what's going on any more. My mouth tastes like copper.

...flash...

I'm dying. Crimson fountains spurting. There's no hope.

..lash...

The lights are fading. Mommy I hit the ground and it hurts so much...

...las...

Why haven't I died Mommy? Heaven or Hell, I don't care...

...la....

I just want the pain to end. Take the pain away.

...a...

Isn't that what mommies do? I don't want to hurt any more.

It's interesting, stays with you a bit after reading, perhaps because it is so freestyle that the brain wants to uncover the deeper meanings that could be hidden within.

Thank you! I have weird ideas about the way the mind works in the second in between. Before I wrote it, a conversation about the best/worst ways to die came up, a question about those fifteen seconds you're 'alive' after you get your head chopped off. People thought it was fine, I was considering how long those fifteen seconds are in actuality.

So, Flash. :D
