Anton's footsteps moved him aimlessly throughout the nearly abandoned city. He could still hear his father-in-law chiding him that here where the climes were more temperate, 'civilized people' didn't go out into the snow. It had taken every bit of his self-control not to haul off and slap the taste out of his mouth. He visualized his wife's face as he turned his back on the man that he had accepted as his kin and went out into the blowing snow.

At least the codger hadn't called him a Communist in a couple of months.

Michael's maroon sedan coughed and sputtered, giving up the ghost about ten miles beyond the outskirts of the city. He was asleep in the back, exhausted after driving for most of their long flight. Sabrina coaxed a final two-hundred yards out of the car before pulling it off of the road and into a small copse of trees.

"You know you're not supposed to be up here."

It didn't even surprise Zach anymore that Isabelle could sneak up on him like that. She sounded like she was right behind him, which meant that she'd come through the roof access door, moved across the roughly textured roof and gotten within striking distance without noticing her presence. Can't call it the wind on a night like tonight.

The small group of survivors were frozen on the spot, terrified by what lay before them.

A bronze ring was set in the floor, four feet in diameter. In the center of it a pillar of light shimmered, a terrible mix of black and red and half a thousand other colors creating something that the mind reeled against; something that just wasn't right. And floating in that impossible light was a little girl, standing three feet off the ground in a simple shift of dark burlap. Her hair was long and dark and reached down to the backs of her knees. Open eyes looked back through the impossible light; blank eyes with no humanity in them.

Jeremiah carefully rifled through the bags for a third time. First he made sure that his portable DVD player had been packed with enough t-shirts to protect it. Then he double-checked that he had packed the right deodorant. He wasn't even sure that he was looking for anything particular this time, but it seemed like the thing to do; who would want to leave something behind?

"Are you set to go?" Jessie's voice made him jump out of his skin. She just had that way of appearing as if out of know it. Her daddy used to call it her 'ghost steps' but the joke had lost its savor after he died at the plant.

Voices beckoned her through the silence, almost like a voice in the back of her head, guiding Essie through the empty park.

A tent seemed to appear in front of her, like one of the ones that gypsy fortune tellers would open up at a fair. It was striped in gold and burgundy with an awning that stretched out for three feet in front of it. Veils draped across the mouth and sides of the awning though, looking like the shop was closed. To make it just that little bit more intimidating, two hulking guards stood in front as well, wearing vests constructed out of golden scales and pants striped to match the tent. Their eyes followed Essie as she approached, but otherwise they were impassive and stood there as if carved from stone.

My first keening was the day I started work at the train station.

Part of me thinks it's funny, a few years on now, that the Stationmaster always brings in newbies on the seventh of the month. Our first keening is our first day, because if you can't take it, then you won't cut it in the job. Before then, I'd been working on an assembly line in what used to be a warehouse where we sorted through spent shell casing to see what could be reused as-is and what pieces would need to be melted down and recast. It was tedious as hell, so I relished at any opportunity to get the hell out of there.

Author's Note: I was really attempting to keep to the word count for the meme. I really really was. Was not aiming for the second longest piece I'd written since coming over to DreamWidth. :-D

><><

"It's going down." Water poured off the shoulders of Malcolm's rain slicker as the little cabin they kept us in was shaken by another clap of thunder. He made an imposing figure, standing there with a lantern in one hand and a massive key ring in the other. "It's now or never. Are you all with me or not?"

Jazzy was the first to speak up. "Of course we're with you," she blurted out, quickly looking to the rest of us who shared the chain that bound us to the wall.
