"Yes?" The drowsy girl with the sweet smile murmured and she pulled the door open to the limit of the security chain.
"Delivery, ma'am." The man in the sharply tailored uniform replied.
"From who?" She pushed a hand through her hair, trying to put it in some semblance of order. Normally people waking her up from a catnap wouldn't get the time of day, nor any semblance of order. But he was cute. And had something to give her. A snippet of an idiom regarding Romans and gifts danced through her mind, but she quickly set it aside.
"I don't know ma'am, we don't have that kind of information. All I know is that it is for you." He had a great smile, and a cute little cap.
Her eyes took him in, and the box; it was long and squared off with a vividly purple bow across it. "Is it flowers?!"
"Well, it's not for me to say, ma'am, but I do work for Flower Gift Express, and, well, I don't know many things that come in the long stem rose boxes."
Squee! Not only was a cute man bringing her a something, but it was a something that was probably long stem roses. She almost bounced, "Hold on." She stepped forward, closing the door momentarily to release the bolt. "Come in. You can set them over here on this table."
"Ah ah ah miss," he said with a small smile, "first I must confirm your identity."
"T'sk" she retorted with a pout, "I'm Violet Carmichael. Yes, THE Violet Carmichael. Is that sufficient, or do I need to go get you some identification."
"That's fine, ma'am." He was so cordial.
"Oh, do sit tight one moment," she murmured, her fingers slipping the bow off, eager to see the pretties, "I want to get you a tip." She fumbled with the box a moment and opened it, revealing two dozen roses, all dried, a macabre mix of bright vivid red and withered ominously black. "I don't..." she murmured, confused.
"I'm sorry." She never heard the shot that killed her, and with the silencer, neither did anyone else.
